The 5 Second Rule (for your brain)

In this week's Moving Forward Monday, we explore the secret behind self-discipline and the motivated achiever, bringing you you an incredible video (in partnership with Be Inspired) that reveals how to use The 5 Second Rule to overcome your brain's resistance (including some short clips by Mel Robbins, Dwayne The Rock Johnson, Kevin Hart, Tony Robbins, Gary Vaynerchuk, Eric Thomas and Denzel Washington that are sure to get you moving).

The truth is that your brain is not your friend. It is not designed to make you happy, or to propel you to be your best, or even to align you with your purpose. It's sole objective is to protect you at all costs, even if that means keeping you from achieving. So it produces fear and pain, and it takes advantage of the time you delay in making a decision to convince you that safer is better; tomorrow is easier. Sound familiar? We are hard-wired to procrastinate because that means we're less likely to do something new or different; something your brain registers as risky and unsafe.

But in order to improve our lives, we must improve. In order to get what we want, we must give ourselves a chance. In order to grow, we must push through the fear and the pain. We must become masters of our own brains.

One of the ways to master your brain is the 5 Second Rule (no, not the food on the floor rule). Described by Mel Robbins in her famous TEDx talk, it goes like this "The moment you feel yourself hesitate (when you know you should do something) start counting backward 5-4-3-2-1, then GO. The Rule is a proven, form of metacognition. When you use it, you shift mental gears, interrupt your habit of overthinking and awaken your pre-frontal cortex – making change easy. The rule acts as a “starting ritual” that breaks bad habits and triggers positive new behavior change."

So this week we encourage you to try the 5 Second Rule. Now you might be saying, "that may not work for me." So what if it doesn't? You've lost what? 5 seconds. BUT what if it does work? How might your life be different if you can become a master of your brain?
